JULIA KOENIG may have only been in the industry a few years, yet there’s no doubt this statuesque brunette is going places. After working for most of fashion’s biggest names, she’s secured a contract with one of the world’s top modelling agencies, WILHELMINA MODELS in New York.

We were lucky to catch up with the Chevron Island local before she heads to the Big Apple in a few days time.

Julia, how long have you been modelling and who have you worked for?

I have been modelling for about four years now and have modelled for Chanel, Ralph Lauren, Zimmerman, Manning Cartel, David Jones, Camilla and Marc, Rodeo Show, Oroton…. The list goes on!

How did you get into the industry?

So many people I told me I should because of my height but I was completely opposed to the idea. Then I realised the kind of money you can make modelling. My poor student days got the better of me!

What was your most recent job?

Chanel show

You’re about head to New York. Tell us about your trip.

I am so excited to head to the Big Apple! At this stage I’m planning on staying until December. As for who I’ll be working for… I’ve got no idea!

Are you nervous about working in such a big city?

I am because there are so many models in NY, it’s the mecca! So it’s going to be challenging, but you can’t feel a sense of accomplishment without a challenge.

Where will you be staying when you get there?

I’m so lucky, my cousin and best friend in the world (actor Margot Robbie) is filming in New York at exactly the same time I’ll be there so I’m staying with her.

As a model you’d get to meet plenty of celebrities! Have you ever been starstruck?

I was definitely seeing stars when I met Miranda Kerr.

Is modelling as glamorous as people think it is?

It can be but there are a lot of long days, early mornings, travelling and lots of waiting around so that kind of dulls the glamour.

What is the best thing about modelling?

Everyday is different!

What is the worst thing?

The uncertainty and finding things out always at the last minute.

How would you describe your style?

Mostly I guess pretty casual and comfortable but I love finding a bargain in vintage stores or stealing my boyfriends clothes.

If you could swap wardrobes with anyone who would it be and why?

Taylor Tomasi Hill – everything I’ve ever seen her in is amazing! I guess at the moment she’s my style icon.

What was your best and worst fashion buys?

My best was my vintage faux fur coat from the 60s, and my worst… Pretty much all the men’s clothes I bought, altered and wore when I was 15… What was I thinking?

What is the thing you’ve learnt most about fashion from your years as a model?

I know this sounds cliche, but I’ve learnt fashion is an attitude. It doesn’t matter what you’re wearing, as long as you have the right attitude wearing what you’re wearing it will look amazing.

What is your favourite fashion shop on the Gold Coast?

Le Deux in James St Burleigh
