Shift dresses, peter pan collars and block colours. LADY PHUNCLE is a look reminiscent of 1960’s icons Twiggy and Jane Birkin.”It’s all based on silhouettes from the 1950’s and 60’s. Really kind of retro minded, retro prints, just stuff you can dress up and dress down,” says designer, ASHLEY KONTIS, “We love, love, love the 60’s”.

While the brand definitely has vintage tones, these pieces are designed for the modern fashionista, so you won’t feel like you’re heading to a dress up party. Rather each collection is made up of simple, tailored items in plain colours. A-line dresses, cute playsuits and high waisted shorts are a LADY PHUNCLE client’s staple. Bows, embroidery and belts add a retro feel.

The London ‘Carnaby Street’ theme isn’t restricted to the designs. Each collection is released in “albums” rather than seasons. The latest “album” is named after music legend Burt Bacharach. “Its ‘Bacharach Forever’ so all our newest items are song names that he had written,” says ASHLEY, a musician by trade, “We hand sew everything with about five or six items per collection”.

LADY PHUNCLE is the sister brand to UNCLE PHUNCLE, a men’s label consisting of hand-printed cartoon themed t-shirts started by Ashley’s boyfriend in 2008. “I then began sewing and started LADY PHUNCLE“.
